Atari 5200 Review: FROGGER

by Parker Brothers

What the hell was going on at Parker Brothers when this game was being designed? Some explanation is required. This is a very good version of Frogger EXCEPT it's afflicted with one of the worst control schemes I've ever had the displeasure to experience. Unlike every other version of Frogger, on the 5200 version you must move the joystick and press the button SIMUTANEOUSLY for your frog to move! (Maybe this isn't the case with a 3rd party controller?) However, this sounds much worse than it actually is. Frogger for the 5200 is actually quite good in spite of the unfortunate control scheme. For the rest of the review, pretend the lame control scheme is absent.

There we go! Frogger for the 5200 has it all! Great graphics, great music and sound effects, and the entire cast of characters from the original. In this version, as in all others, you must guide Frogger to his lilly pads. In the first leg of your journey, you must avoid traffic on a New Jersey highway. (judging from it's deeply flawed design; the programmers were smart enough to avoid libel suits by not labeling the highway as such, but most of us aren't fooled.) On the second leg of the journey you must hop across turtles' backs (careful, some of 'em dive, and the current is too swift for you to swim!). Occasionally you must even hitch a ride from alligator. Be careful not to jump in it's jaws though! On the higher levels, the snakes slither around looking for a bite. Don't let their friendly smiles fool you, they're dangerous!

Enough explanation, get out there and get this great version of a fun, challenging, original game. For what it's worth, Frogger is the only game that my stepfather will play. Wait, what's happening???

Anyway, if you can get past the silly controls, this is still a darn fun game. I don't like the controls the way they are, but it's not enough to ruin the game for me. I'm trying to look at it as an additional challenge, but even I'll admit that sometimes it's tough. Recommended to those who have patience and especially to those who liked the original. I know I'm going to take some heat for these high ratings, but....
