AGH Atari 2600 Review:

by M-Network (Mattel)

The Intellivision guys jumped on the VCS bandwagon, sensing an opportunity to cash in on the 2600's popularity. Astroblast is a watered-down version of the smash-hit Intellivision game, Astrosmash.

Gameplay is your standard slide-and-shoot fare that had been done a thousand times before in games such as Space Invaders, Galaxian and Megamania. Various ships and debris descend upon the planet's surface and the object is to shoot them (duh!).

The one major difference between Astroblast and the numerous Space Invaders hybrids lies in the former's scoring system. Avoiding the falling objects is your perogative, but it will come at a cost of negative points. That's right... you actually LOSE points for every enemy that you fail to eliminate.

While the graphics are an obvious downgrade from the stellar Intellivision version of the game, the fast pace and tighter controls found in 2600 Astroblast actually makes this version the more playable of the two.
